A Marion County resident who ran for Ocala City Council during last month’s election will be appointed to the city’s planning and zoning commission on Tuesday.

During its regular meeting on October 19, Ocala City Council members will consider an application by Kevin Lopez to fill a vacancy left on the Planning and Zoning Commission by Andrea Ferro, who resigned from the board at the end of August.

The application is an item on the city’s consent agenda. Consent agenda items are enacted by one vote unless one of the items is pulled for discussion.

According to the application filed with the city, Lopez started his career in IT and worked his way up from a “help desk intern to an Application Development Manager.”

“I work daily on large scale, multi-year projects: managing requirements, budgets, system performance, and scalability. I believe I can bring my analytical approach and background of systems planning for managing these factors in order to help the community with growth,” said Lopez in his application to the city.

Lopez, who has been a resident of the county for two years, finished fifth out of six candidates in the District 4 special election that took place on September 21, 2021. He received around 6.29% of the vote, or 574 votes.

The appointment will still leave one vacancy on the commission, which is responsible for advising Ocala City Council on long-range planning and permitting of land development within the city.

The commission currently meets on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. For more information, or to submit an application for the board, visit the Ocala Planning and Zoning Commission website.
