The Marion County Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution on Tuesday that extends a temporary reduction in certain fees and charges for building and safety permit applications.
According to Florida Statutes 553.80(7)(a), local governments may not carry forward an amount exceeding the average of its operating budget for the previous four fiscal years. To comply with Florida Statutes, Marion County’s Building Safety department requested the following:
- An extension of the temporary reduction of building permits, inspections, and plan reviews by 40%.
- A reduction of the square footage cost on any building-related fee to zero dollars for an additional one-year period beginning on April 1, 2022.
Marion County’s Building Safety department provides inspections and permits for all types of construction within the county to ensure the safety and integrity of built structures. Mike Savage, Marion County Building Safety Director, described the discount as being “a helpful token for homeowners and contractors during this period of inflation.”
The department hosts a quarterly seminar, Code Café, that answers different questions concerning building and permitting within the community. “The Code Café provides an open line of communication with contractors and citizens to provide feedback and input on how we operate within our permitting and inspection process,” said Savage.
