Ocala Fire Rescue Captain Michael Ferguson has retired after 32 years of service.
Born and raised in Ocala, Ferguson (also known as “Fergie” and “Ferg”) began his firefighting career in 1990, at the age of 21, when he was offered an opportunity by then-Fire Chief Will Woods.
At Ocala Fire Rescue, Ferguson served as a Paramedic Preceptor (1993-1999) and a Special Operations Member (1993-2021), and he earned numerous citations and life-saving awards over the years.
“On a personal level, Fergie has made faith, family, and career his pillars – convictions evidenced by the beautiful family he and his wife cultivated (five children and five grandchildren),” stated OFR in a social media post.
OFR thanked Ferguson for his impressive three-plus decades of service and mentioned that his “self-professed certified Ninja and shower singing skills” will be missed.
As he begins his retirement, Ferguson shared some parting words. “Always remember to enjoy life. Make faith, family, and then career your priorities. Learn to love, forgive, and offer grace.”
Ferguson added, “Utilize trust between your brothers and sisters to navigate crises during your career. It’s okay to cry on your peer’s shoulder after bad calls. And never forget that it’s okay to smile more and laugh often, especially at yourself.”
