To the Editor:
Most letters are written about politics, religion, or the environment. This letter is better defined as a public service announcement, prompted by my concern for those who do not realize they are engaging in a dangerous practice which could lead to severe injury.
With the cooler weather, many motorists drive with their windows down as they enjoy the cool breezes. What I have noticed, and what concerns me, is I have seen several front seat passengers riding with their feet up on the dashboard. Some folks fail to realize that under that pretty looking dashboard is a monster, in the form of an airbag, waiting to get out.
Car and Driver reports that when an airbag is deployed, it “inflates in as little as 20 to 30 milliseconds, hurtling forward at 30 mph.” When that occurs and you have your feet on the dashboard, it will push your legs back with enough force to cause your knees to meet your face, and depending on your physics, it could break your back.
I have been meaning to write this letter for some time, but what prompted me to do so now is what I recently witnessed in a parking lot. A couple pulled into a parking space next to me and when I glanced over, I noticed the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt and had a child sitting on her lap. A front collision would deploy the airbag while, at the same time, the passenger would be thrown forward with the child being crushed between them.
Air bags can save your life, but it could also take it if you ignore their explosive power. Be wise, wear your seatbelt, sit in an upright position, and most of all, do not let a child sit on your lap.
