A record-high number of students are learning in Marion County Public Schools.
As of the official count in December of 2023, the district has enrolled a total of 45,651 students, nearly reaching this year’s projection of 45,687 students. According to MCPS, this is the highest student count in the district’s 155-year history.
This year, elementary school enrollment in Marion County is up to 21,586 students. In addition, the district currently has 9,917 middle school and 13,032 high school students, as well as 1,116 students enrolled at alternative sites and special learning centers.
“The latest numbers show the district has grown nearly 9% in just 10 years,” stated MCPS in a media release on Wednesday.
Below is a snapshot of recent enrollment figures for Marion County Public Schools:
- 2023-2024 school year: 45,651 students.
- 2022-2023 school year: 44,488 students.
- 2020-2021 school year: 41,279 students.
- 2018-2019 school year: 42,925 students.
- 2013-2014 school year: 41,950 students.
To help with the increasing student growth in the area, MCPS is building two elementary schools and one high school in southwest Marion County.
According to MCPS, the new elementary schools are expected to open no sooner than August 2026, and the high school is tentatively slated to open its doors in August 2027.
The last new school to open in MCPS was in 2013.
