A Marion County Sheriff’s Office K-9 was shot and wounded during an altercation with a battery suspect in Silver Springs on Saturday morning.
At around 9 a.m., MCSO deputies responded to the 900 block of NE 144th Court in Silver Springs in reference to a situation involving a suspect accused of battery by strangulation. Upon arrival at the incident location, deputies located the suspect in the backyard of a nearby home, according to the sheriff’s office.
MCSO stated in a media release that the unidentified male suspect began shooting at the deputies, and K-9 Leo was injured in the exchange.
Shortly after deputies returned fire, the suspect was apprehended. He was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
K-9 Leo was rushed to UF Veterinary Hospital. According to MCSO, a dedicated team at the hospital is doing everything possible to save him.

“Leo isn’t just a member of our force; he’s family,” added MCSO. “His loyalty, courage, and unwavering dedication to his duty embody the very essence of what it means to serve and protect. His sacrifice today reminds us of the dangers our deputies face each day to keep our community safe.”
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently investigating the shooting incident.
