An 84-year-old Ocala man who was walking along a multimodal path in the On Top of the World retirement community this morning was killed after he was struck from behind by a golf cart being driven by a 93-year-old woman.
The fatal accident took place on a multimodal path along SW 94th Street in Ocala at around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The path is located within On Top of the World, a large retirement community in southwest Ocala.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the elderly man was walking westbound on the eastbound multi-modal path along SW 94th Street when he was struck from behind by a golf cart.
That golf cart, which was being driven by a 93-year-old woman from Ocala, had also been traveling westbound in the eastbound multimodal path.
According to the report, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene by Marion County Fire Rescue. The woman was uninjured in the crash.
A multi-modal path is a roadway intended for pedestrians, bicycles, golf carts, and similar modes of transport. Multi-modal paths are popular in retirement communities where golf carts are often the primary mode of transportation for residents.
