The College of Central Florida closed its Ocala campus on Monday afternoon to allow students and staff to prepare for Hurricane Milton, which has strengthened into a category 5 hurricane as of this evening.

On Monday, the school announced that it was closing its campus at 5 p.m. The campus will remain closed through Thursday, October 10 in order to provide students and employees with time to prepare for the storm.

“All online and on-campus classes and activities during that time have been canceled or postponed, including the Ira Holmes room dedication, the Ira Holmes International Film Series screenings, and the Criminal Justice graduation ceremony,” reads a statement from the college.

The college, which is located at 3001 SW College Road, says it plans to reopen Friday morning for classes and business operations.

Marion County Public Schools canceled after-school activities on Tuesday. Classes are canceled on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

As of this evening, Hurricane Milton has strengthened to a category 5 storm, with maximum sustained winds over 185 mph.

On Monday afternoon, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management division issued a mandatory evacuation order for residents of certain mobile homes and RVs.
