A student discipline report that will be presented to the Marion County School Board next week shows that at least 47 students have been expelled through the first 31 days of the school year.
According to the student discipline report, through September 24, 2024, approximately 47 students have been expelled for over a dozen different disciplinary reasons.
There have been approximately 21 expulsions this year for fighting, battery, and inciting violence, and at least five for illegal drug possession, according to the report.
On Tuesday, the school board will look to approve approximately two dozen expulsions, both with and without services, for the remainder of the year.
It is unclear whether those expulsions are separate from the other 47.
The report indicates that there have been 60 alternative placements at Marion Technical Institute this year.
Approximately 30 of the expulsions were for high school students and around 16 were for middle school students. The report also notes one expulsion of a fifth-grade student.
The report also breaks down expulsions and disciplinary incidents by gender and race, showing that 28 of the expulsions were for black male and female students, 10 were for white male and female students, and 5 were for Hispanic males.
Through August 26, the school district expelled 10 students and assigned at least 25 to alternative placements.
This summer, the school district announced its plans to host alternative learning within the district for the first time in county history.
Alternative placements are being handled at Marion Technical Institute, which is located at 1614 E. Fort King Street in Ocala.
The Marion County School Board meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. at Marion Technical Institute (1614 E Fort King Street in Ocala).
