Marion County Public Schools will remain open on Wednesday, January 22, but all outdoor activities will be canceled in light of freezing temperatures in the area over the coming days.
The district issued the statement on Tuesday afternoon.
“Schools will be open tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 22. Outdoor activities, Wednesday and Thursday, are canceled, but indoor activities remain as scheduled,” reads a statement published by the district.
Physical education and recess will also be hosted indoors, according to the district.
According to The Weather Channel, the forecast in Ocala shows low temperatures between 28 degrees and 32 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday night, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Temperatures will warm up again by the weekend, with estimated highs in the 70s all next week.
During comments by Ocala City Manager Peter Lee at the Ocala City Council meeting on Tuesday evening, Lee confirmed the school closure and addressed additional concerns.
“We will monitor for SunTran. If we have icy roads, we’ll suspend until we don’t have icy roads. It looks like by mid-morning, things should clear up,” said Lee. The city manager says OEU will have additional “on-call crews” and that “they’re ready and prepared to respond” to any outages.
