The principal at Fort McCoy Middle School called a Marion County sheriff’s deputy for help Thursday after realizing a scammer was attempting to use her identity through an email account to collect gift cards.

The principal told the deputy that several teachers at the school, located at 16160 NE Hwy. 315, had informed her they had received a fraudulent email. They said it appeared to come from her and was asking for gift cards to be purchased and then given to her. In return, the email said, she would refund the money for the gift cards at a later date, a sheriff’s office report states.

The principal said she had never sent such an email and that she was unsure who would create something like that using her identity. She said it didn’t appear that anyone had suffered a monetary loss and the email was sent only to teachers at her school.

The deputy told the principal he would file a suspicious incident report for her records and to contact the sheriff’s office in the future if she found out about any future monetary losses, the report says.
